CATCHING UP ON TOBIAS HARRIS
2010 prospect visits WVU and will see UConn, Marquette this month, too
Long Island Lutheran junior Tobias Harris continues to plow ahead in the recruiting process. After a whirlwind tour of colleges through visits, AAU events and elite camps this summer, the 6-foot-8, 230 pound forward had a lot of information to take in. From meeting with academic counselors, Hall of Fame coaches and running drills during camps while be instructed by the top basketball technicians of the day, it was a great education for one of the most coveted class of 2010 prospects in the country. Now that the summer has ended, Harris has once again hit the visiting trail. However, what most college basketball fans are looking to find out, has he pared down his recruiting list at all?
“We listed his top ten favorite schools and everyone thought he cut his list,” Tobias’ father, Torrel Harris Sr. told the NBE Basketball Report. At the time, the top 10 was Louisville, Syracuse, Rutgers, Georgetown, Virginia, Maryland, Marquette, West Virginia, Wake Forest and USC. Since then, Connecticut has been re-added to the list of favorites and Georgia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Tennessee and Indiana are also in play too, pushing the list back upwards to 16 teams. At the time of the top 10, Mr. Harris was clear with NBE that it was NOT a final list of 10 schools.
“Tobias’ favorites are not necessarily excluding any other schools from his selection, but it is important to Tobias to be a part of a program that is truly interested in him,” was what Mr. Harris indicated to us at summer’s end, so seeing other schools re-enter the picture strongly has not been a surprise.
When pressed to see which of the 16 had been putting in the extra effort, nine schools were mentioned by Mr. Harris, “West Virginia, Louisville, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Connecticut (and) Virginia.”
Now, another round of visits is underway and it began with a weekend trip to West Virginia to get another look at Bob Huggins’ program in Morgantown. Tobias had been offered a scholarship by the WVU head coach early in the summer after impressive the Mountaineer coach at the WVU Elite Camp. The second visit was always very much enjoyed.
“We are having a great time,” Mr. Harris said. “Tobias is enjoying the school very much (and) he had the chance to spend some time with the players. He enjoyed the football game and Tobias spent some quality time speaking with coach Huggins and his staff about his future plans for West Virginia and how Tobias would fit into his plan to win a NCAA Championship.”
The extra attention that coach Huggins has shown the Harris family has made a strong mark on them in the recruiting process.
“Tobias felt very comfortable at WVU they are very high on his list,” his father indicated.
Next up are more visits for Tobias as there is a planned trip to Connecticut for their Midnight Madness festivities of October 17th. A week later a trip to the Midwest is on the itinerary as they will head out to visit Buzz Williams and Marquette. The first weekend of November the plan is for a multi-tour stop in the Peach State with a trip to the University of Georgia and a stop at Georgia Tech in the same weekend.
In between visits, Tobias continues to work on his game and his academics remain a top priority as well. As a skilled forward armed with a high basketball IQ, Tobias knows that improving conditioning, strength as well as speed and agility will make him tougher to compete against at the next level. He is also determined to hit the college game with an inside-out game of an improving jump shot and fundamentally sound post moves, leaving no doubt, Tobias Harris is the full package for colleges, on and off the court.
