35) CHRIS SMITH
35. Chris Smith: Connecticut: (1988-92) Bridgeport, CT
Four years: 16.9 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.5 spg, 40% 3FG, 76.1% FT
The first excellent player of the Jim Calhoun Era, Smith stayed home because he wanted to turn the local school into a national power. Smith did just that and became the Huskies all-time leader scorer in the process, an honor he still holds. Of course the other Huskies greats left early but that does not diminish his accomplishments.
After a good freshman season of 9.9 ppg, Smith’s sophomore season was magical as he led UConn to national prominence with the Huskies’ 30 win 1990-91 “Dream Season”. Smith led the way with 17.2 ppg, 3.6 apg, 1.7 spg, 39.3% from three point range, and 81.1% from the line. He followed it with a junior year of 18.9 ppg, 3.4 apg, 1.8 spg, ad 39.3% from three point land. As a senior, Smith exploded for 21.2 ppg to go along with 3.7 apg and 1.2 spg. His shooting was superb making 42.0% of his threes and 80.0% of his free throws. His 22.1 ppg average in conference was the best in the league.
Smith totaled 2,145 points in his career and his 1,140 points in conference is 15th best all-time. An excellent three point shooter, Smith made 40.0% of his shots from beyond the arc and his total of 242 is a UConn record. A second round pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the 6’2” guard play three seasons in the NBA.
