28) JOHN BAGLEY
28. John Bagley: Boston College - (1979-82) Bridgeport, CT
Three years: 17.9 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.7 spg, 77.8%
Player of the Year (1981)
“Bags”, as he was affectionately known, was a sturdy 6’0” point guard and the first star of Boston College’s Big East era.
As a freshman, he started off solidly with 11.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, and 1.5 spg, but it was his sophomore year when he truly exploded onto the scene by becoming the conference’s second ever Player of the Year in 1981. During that season, Bagley led the Eagles to the Big East regular championship by averaging 20.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.4 apg, and 1.8 spg. He also shot 50.0% from the floor and 78.8% from the line. His junior season was even more impressive as he led the Eagles to the Elite 8 by averaging 21.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.8 apg, and 1.9 spg, while shooting 50.1% from the floor and 79.7% from the line.
“(John Bagley) helped sell the Big East in Boston,” remembers former Big East announcer, and current voice of the Boston Celtics, Mike Gorman, “(which was) always a tough sell.”
Left for the NBA after his junior season but not before amassing 1,629 points and a 21.0 ppg conference average, good for 6th all-time. He was drafted 12th overall in the NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers and played for four teams over thirteen seasons. He averaged 8.7 ppg in his NBA career.
