OPEN EVALUATION PERIOD MISC NEWS & NOTES
July 16, 2009 by NBE Blogger · 1 Comment
Going back through the notebooks, we have found several other items of note from the last 10 days that we have not put into previous articles. Over the next week we will have some other articles and player evaluations from the first 10-day live evaluation period. All the while, we gear up for the next 10 day period of live evaluation for college coaches to close out the month.
Here are some updates from our team thatwas on the road for the 10 days…
Doug Ferguson took in the Chicago Summer Classic at the Joy of the Game facility in Deerfield (IL). Many of the top teams in the Midwest came by to play as they geared up for the summer team events. Here are a few additional school lists that Doug got while at the event…
- James Siakam was catching the attention of many while playing for the Illinois Titans. The 6-foot-7 forward out of Carbondale (IL) was dominating in the post and playing with aggression. Siakam has a wide range of schools on his list, but expect more high majors to replace the lower schools as time goes on. The 2011 prospect has DePaul, Southern Illinois, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Illinois, Dayton, IUPUI, Iowa State, The Citadel, Marquette and Nebraska as a list of interested college suitors.
- Mike McCall and Lavonte Dority both star for Foreman High School of Chicago (IL) and the 2010 prospects are both seeing their share of colleges interested in their services. Dority, a 6-foot point guard gave a tidy school list of Baylor, Marquette, Indiana and Providence at the Chicago Classic.
McCall told NBE that DePaul, Texas A&M, Cal, Dayton, Xavier, Minnesota, Nevada, St. Louis and Wisconsin made up his current list of colleges.
- Rising Stars Gold was the host of the tournament and their starting five has been gobbled up by colleges with verbal commitments expect for one holdover, DeKalb (IL) High School center Jordan Threloff. The 6-foot-10 center has a current list of Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Indiana State, DePaul, Bradley, Drake, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Detroit and Loyola (IL), each having offered a scholarship.
- 6-foot-5 wing Jacob Williams of out Chicago (IL) St. Patrick’s has offers from Providence, DePaul, Marquette and Bradley with Indiana showing a high amount of interest. Williams is in the class of 2011.

Brian Crownover spent a couple days at the Hoop Group’s Harley Jamfest in Morgantown (WV) to close the open evaluation period. Here are some of the notes and observations he has for NBE while there…
- Donte Thomas, a class of 2011 shooting guard out of Balou High School near DC is seeing interest from Georgetown and has offers from Hawaii and San Jose State.
- Georgetown was taking a look at DaJuan Coleman, the 2012 big man out of Jamesville-Dewitt (NY) High School.
- East Coast Fusion has a rapidly improving big man in 6-foot-11 John Henderson and the skilled big was matched up against Georgetown-commit Nate Lubick yesterday. Staff members from Georgetown, Notre Dame and Providence were taking in the contest (NE Playaz is very popular among those schools) and Henderson was certainly making a positive impression as well. One local college coach remarked about his improvement since the high school season.
- West Virginia and Pittsburgh had assistants watching Xpressions (MA) Elite AAU compete. Tyler Olander, a 6-foot-11 class of 2011 inside/out threat is having a good tournament and interest in him is picking up. Rod Odom of Middlesex School is also highly interesting to high-majors in the Big East. Odom is rounding back into shape after a bout with mono.
- The race to get involved with Jonathan Arledge continues to pick up steam. Fresh off his eye-opening performance at the Reebok Summer Classic, the 6-foot-9 PF/C from KIMA near DC has received offers from Penn State and Michigan. Georgetown and Providence have also been taking an interest.

Matt Whitfield spent a day at the Summer Classic East in Neptune (NJ) and a day at the Playaz Joe Brown Memorial Tournament in Englewood (NJ). He has a few recruiting notes that were not included in the earlier updates from the events…
- Derrick Williams, the 6-foot-7 big man fronm St. Anthony’s (NJ) is now receiving new interest from Boston College and he will visit the school. He recently took a visit to both Richmond and Virginia.
- Wadleigh (NYC) wing Malik Thomas has an offer from Hofstra and is also receiving interest from Seton Hall, where he visited just prior to the start of the open period, and Virginia along with schools such as LIU, Binghamption and others.
- In a text message, Jelan Kendrick informed NBE that he will attend Westlake (GA) High School next year. He was reported to be considering several prep schools previously.
- Ameen Tankersley is a 6-foot-5 wing playing for Team Philly on the AAU circuit out of Prep Charter in the strong Philly-area class fo 2011. At the Joe Brown Memorial, Tankersley told NBE that he is receiving interest from Temple, VCU, LaSalle, Georgia Tech, Georgetown and Providence. He is also planning an unofficial visit to Connecticut in August.
Tankerlsey indicated that the Big East would be his conference of choice.
- Juan’Ya Green told NBE this week that he has an offer from Villanova and they are his current favorite. The 2011 lead guard also has offers from Maryland, Temple and St. Joseph’s with Big East schools such as Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Georgetown and Providence showing interest.
