Jeff Borzello and Matt Whitfield have both found their way to Philadelphia University for the 2009 Reebok All-American Camp. The camp has been split up between 12 teams and there are two games going simultaneously at a time, starting this morning at 9 AM. It is a long day today with each team playing three games with a morning, afternoon and evening session. The format is the same on Thursday and Friday will have a morning session of games, an afternoon round of playoffs with an evening championship game and all-star contests.
Let’s take a look at some of the news and notes from the early part of the camp…
- John Johnson, a class of 2010 guard from nearby Girard College High School in the Philly-area, told NBE on Wednesday morning that he has scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, St. Joseph’s, LaSalle, St. John’s and Notre Dame. Others showing interest include Marquette, UCLA and Clemson.
St. John’s and Marquette each had an assistant coach watching Johnson’s game.
- South Florida head coach Stan Heath has been spotted checking out the action on court #2. One player catching his attention is likely Isaiah Sykes out of Detroit’s Finney High School. Sykes told NBE that the Bulls, along with Syracuse, Oklahoma, Michigan, Tennessee and Michigan State are recruiting him.
- Other assistant coaches spotted on court #2 have been from West Virginia, Providence, Miami, Baylor, Washington, Wake Forest, SMU, Tulance, Siena, LaSalle, Temple, Indiana and TCU.
- On court #1 LaQuinton Ross, one of the elite players in the class of 2011, and fellow Mississippi 2011 product Rodney Hood are drawing an impressive crowd. While there are not a lot of head coaches in Philly today, Kevin O’Neill of USC, Derek Kellogg of UMass, Doc Sadler of Nebraska, Mark Fox of Georgia and Bob McKillop of Davidson are seen taking in the contest. Big East assistants Brandin Knight of Pittsburgh and Pat Skerry of Providence are watching this game as well as assistants from Louisville and Marquette. Other assistants from Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Alabama and Memphis.
- Following his opening game at RBK, LaQuinton Ross, who is from Jackson (MS), told NBE he currently has offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas, USC, Florida, Connecticut, Baylor, Syracuse, Memphis and Alabama.
Speaking about Syracuse, Ross told NBE that he would likely visit the Orange this August and that SU is “mainly the one in the Big East I like.” Ross also made a point to say he is “really wide open” in the recruiting process.
- One of the better known national prospects in the class of 2010 here in Philly this week is Jacksonville (FL) small forward Stacey Poole of Andrew Jackson HS. Poole tells NBE he has offers from Clemson, South Carolina, Indiana and Miami with strong interest coming from Connecticut, Louisville and Kentucky. He would like to visit all three that are showing strong interest in August.
- Aaron Brown, of St. Benedict’s Prep, might not have the biggest national rep, but he was reppin’ for the local guys this morning on court #2 with a strong performance. Brown lists Virginia Tech, Virginia, Harvard, Penn, Temple, Auburn, Providence, St. John’s and Seton Hall on his varied list.
- Half the camp have come through court #2 where Jeff Borzello has been stationed since midway through the opening game this morning. Borzello lists Aaron Brown, 6-foot-9 Georgia product Donte Williams and the St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) duo of Devon Collier and Ashton Pankey as the most impressive so far in the early going.
