RUMBLE RECRUITING REVIEW: ‘NOVA, CINCY & USF
June 24, 2009 by NBE Blogger · Leave a Comment
In our final look at the Rumble in the Bronx recruiting information, we take a look at Villanova, Cincinnati and South Florida and the players that mentioned interest in each school from our three days between Fordham and Manhattan College during the 2009 Rumble in the Bronx nearly two weeks ago. We have previously looked at 12 other Big East teams and these three will finish our look (DePaul did not have any mentions from the players we talked to) at each team’s recruiting targets.
Villanova is no doubt a hot recruiting name, coming off a consensous top 5 class for 2009 and a run to the Final Four last March, Jay Wright continues to recruit well in the NYC/NJ region. The former head coach of Hofstra certainly knows his way around the Big Apple and uses a system that players, especially guards, are definitely interested in playing in.
The Northeast is not the most visible area for either Cincinnati or South Florida, and the weekend in the Bronx pretty much held that notion true as neither team was on the mind of more than one player each. We will certainly see more interest in those two schools, as well as DePaul, as we head out on the trail in July.
For now, here is the rundown on Villanova, Cincinnati and South Florida (almost feel the need for a parlay calculator):
Vaughn Gray, a forward from Don Bosco Prep, likes Delaware, Providence, UMass, Temple, St. Joe’s and Villanova. He hopes to check out PC and ‘Nova in the near future.
Trevor Cooney, a 2011 prospect out of Delaware playing for Team Final. His current schools of interest include Boston U, Delaware, Syracuse, Villanova, Ohio State, Rutgers, Texas and Maryland. He has been to Delaware and ‘Cuse, ‘Nova and Maryland and would like to see Ohio State and get a sense for what a Big 10 school is like.
Jaylen Bond and the East Coast Elite was knocked out of the Silver bracket earlier by CBC. Bond told NBE this morning that he has taken unofficial visits to Florida, Virginia, LaSalle and will reschedule the trip to Florida State that was put off due to finals. Temple, St. Joseph’s, West Virginia and Villanova are also involved with the impressive 2011 forward.
St. Peter’s Prep 6-foot-6 forward Ronald Roberts listed Maryland, Villanova, George Mason and Notre Dame as schools showing recent interest. Roberts checked in with NBE to make sure he did not forget to mention LaSalle, Temple and Houston.
Another from New Heights with a lot of Big East interest is powerful forward Jayvaughn Pinkston, who played at Bishop Loughlin last season (and word is will be at Oak Hill next season). According to New Heights’ AAU coach Kimani Young, who was the video coordinator at St. John’s this past season, Pinkston “is the guy in New York” right now. He recently visited Marquette for one of their elite specialty camps and will take unofficial trips, most likely, to Villanova and Arizona. St. John’s, who is considered the leader, and Tennessee were also mentioned by Young as the schools on Pinkston’s list.
Michael Gilchrist, the eventual Rumble MVP playing for tournament champion Team Final, rattled off a school list of Villanova, Memphis, Indiana, Georgetown, Kentucky, Syracuse, Louisville and Seton Hall Friday night.
St. John’s, Xavier, South Carolina, Marquette, Providence, Kentucky, Georgetown, Cincinnati, Miami and Kansas were programs mentioned Saturday by Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-5 small forward with the Gauchos and Rice High School.
Russ Smith and the Juice All-Stars played well again, following up the win over NJ ABC with a late comeback to defeat Team Odom LA. His school list is a long one and has plenty of time to sort things out as he moves to South Kent for next season. The schools mentioned today were Notre Dame, St. John’s, Connecticut, Louisville, Providence, Seton Hall, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Stanford, South Carolina, Central Florida, South Florida, LaSalle, George Mason and VCU.
