2008-2009 PREVIEW: BIG EAST’S TOP POINT GUARDS
November 9, 2008 by NBE Blogger · 2 Comments
Recently we took a poll among several of the writers and contributors of the NBE Basketball Report asking them to rank the Top 10 returning point guards as well as listing the Top Five incoming point guards expected to make an impact this season.
Here is how the voting stacked up, for each of the 10 returning point guard, click on their name and you can see their individual write-up from the team blog sites…let’s rank ‘em:
10: Sharaud Curry of Providence. Still working back from the foot injury that sidelined him all but 8 minutes of last season.
9: Chris Wright of Georgetown. Definitely the candidate to move up the most on next year’s list. Talent to be top three soon.
8: Edgar Sosa of Louisville. Waiting for it all to click for this offensively talented guard. Shares time with senior Andre McGee.
7: Eugene Harvey of Seton Hall. The Pirates need Harvey to show the end of 2007-2008 was an aberration and not how he is trending.
6: Tory Jackson of Notre Dame. Understands role of team leader and his job is to deliver the ball to Harangody and McAlarney. Best rebounder on the list.
5: Dominic James of Marquette. Stock might be slipping, but still a force to be reckoned with that can create havoc with athleticism and quickness.
4: Scottie Reynolds of Villanova. Probably would have ranked similarly if on the shooting guard list. That dual role of handler and scorer becomes blurred at times.
3: Levance Fields of Pittsburgh. Typical NYC point guard with toughness and flair. Questions about his foot does temper some of his senior season expectations.
2: Jonny Flynn of Syracuse. Should have more help this season. Athletically and offensively gifted, Flynn has the makings of a star.
1: AJ Price of Connecticut. Showed the full package last season. Injury questions linger as he begins his senior year and may even play more off the ball.
The Freshman:
Top Dog: Kemba Walker of Connecticut was named the the Big East coaches as the preseason co-freshman of the year in the conference. His presence could push AJ Price off the ball more as they will see the court together often.
Others to Watch: While Cashmere Wright of Cincinnati was expected to see a lot of time prior to a season-ending knee injury, Jordan Theodore of Seton Hall and Jeremiah Kelly of DePaul figure to see a lot of floor time this year. If Levance Fields misses time at Pitt, Travon Woodall could be manning the point. ‘Truck’ Bryant of WVU is another to watch.
