NBA TOP 100 CAMP: THURSDAY PLAYER REVIEWS

June 20, 2008 – Yesterday was the second of this year’s National Basketball Association Players Association’s Top 100 camp, an invitation only affair held at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Center. As to be expected, many Big East recruiting targets were present. As such follows a rundown of many of those players (all rising seniors), and how they fared, along with the interested Big East school (s).
Omari Lawrence – 6’4”, 205lbs - (Georgetown, Pittsburgh and others) – The rising senior swing man from the Bronx, NY hurt his shoulder and looked slightly sluggish, but nevertheless continued to show why not only Big East, but ACC, Conference USA, and Pac 10 institutions covet him, as the lefty can still slice to the cup, finish, and hit the mid-range jumper.
Terrell Vinson – 6’6”, 210lbs - (Georgetown, Villanova) – Vinson continues to display his improved perimeter play, making him truly a coveted future swingman in high major ball. The athleticism is there, and the ball handling, including with the left hand, are in full effect for the native of Baltimore, MD, who also lists the likes of UNC and possibly Duke as options.
Durand Scott 6’4”, 180lbs – (Pittsburgh, others) – Pittsburgh is on this combo guard hard (with the love being reciprocated) and it shows – he’s tough, runs a team, and is vocal. Time and time again, Scott, hailing from New York, NY found open teammates, including several nice dimes in half court traffic during evening play. Of course ACC schools are drooling as well.
Dante Taylor – 6’9”, 220lbs - (Pittsburgh, Georgetown, others) – A force in the paint, Taylor wants to flush any and everything around the rim. Originally from upstate New York but now attending school in Maryland, Taylor is showing his forceful game can translate to increasingly larger and larger stages.
Darrius Morris – 6’3”, 175lbs (Marquette, South Florida, Notre Dame) – If you haven’t heard this Carson, CA product is considering the Big East, he definitely is, as playing time and academics will largely dictate where the defensive-minded point guard will attend school. Morris can also hit the open jumper on a regular basis. Big Ten and Pac Ten squads have also offered. Has a good feel for the game.
Karron Johnson – 6’7”, 220lbs (Seton Hall, Georgetown) – Karron is still Karron – he’s never seen a basket that he felt couldn’t be slammed on (during lunch time he was actually jumping over people and dunking). But the Richmond, VA native is becoming much more than simply a dunker, as now he can hit the perimeter jumper; it’s not a pretty shot given a line drive trajectory indicative of guiding the ball instead of releasing it properly, but it fell fairly regularly yesterday. With a jumper out to three point land, along with continued improved ball-handling, Johnson could be a force in the Big East, ACC, Conference USA, or Pac Ten, all leagues containing schools that have offered scholarships.
Cadarian Raines – 6’8”, 225lbs – (South Florida) – An active player that competes on both sides of the floor, Raines has not only been offered by South Florida, but also ACC and Conference USA institutions. Some may define him as raw, but Cadarian, a resident of Petersburg, VA, battles, can hit mid range jumpers, and moves constantly.
